Maya Jocelyn | Founder
Maya began dancing at the age of five and continued on to complete a BFA in Modern Dance at SUNY Purchase. She then graduated from the Connecticut Center for Massage Therapy and become a licensed massage therapist. For ten years, Maya specialized in chronic pain and injury recovery. In 2006, she transitioned her practice from bodywork to movement work, teaching people how to change the way they move to prevent pain and injuries. It evolved into a core strengthening and injury prevention technique called the Maya Method. It is strongly influenced by Pilates, yoga, dance and the work of Caroline Myss. Maya received certifications from the National Academy of Sports Medicine, Pilates International, and Annette Lang (post-rehabilitative training and pre/postnatal training). She opened Studio Maya in 2008 to offer a safe place for people to heal and develop their body in a holistic manner with techniques based on science and research.
Emma Young | Maya Method
Emma grew up in Belgium dancing jazz and ballet. She went on to study Tai Chi, Yoga and Pilates. She completed her BA in Social Studies and MA in International Politics from Ghent University. In 2017, Emma moved to NYC where she completed her certification with the National Academy of Sport Medicine. She began an apprenticeship at Studio Maya in 2018. Emma is particularly drawn to the combination of letting go while getting stronger.
Danielle Henry | Brooklyn Booty, Bosu Body
Danielle completed her B.S. in Communication and Gender Studies at Pace University. She became certified in personal training, Kettlebell Concepts as well as Annette Lang’s Pre/Postnatal Training and Intergrated Stretching. Danielle specializes in strategically driving muscles to fatigue in order to swiftly develop muscle mass.
Jess Grippo | Beginner Ballet
JJess grew up dancing ballet at the Joffrey Ballet School. She took a break from dance to go to NYU where she completed a BA in Psychology and Sociology with a focus on Culture and Gender Studies. After college, Jess returned to dance studying jazz, African and Haitian dance, as well as comedy and theater. Because of her own journey back to dance, Jess understands how it feels to be intimidated by the dance studio. She enjoys creating a warm, welcoming and non-judgmental atmosphere for all her dance classes. Jess now has a creativity coaching practice with a program called, “You Can Dance Again.”
Leslie Lissaint | Zumba
Leslie Lissaint is a certified personal trainer through National Academy of Sports Medicine as well as a certified Zumba instructor. Leslie has trained and taught ballet, tap, modern, Hip-Hop, African dance, and contemporary dance classes. She is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she studied Portuguese and Latin American, Caribbean, and Iberian Studies. She has also trained as an actress at the prestigious Eugene O’Neil Theater Institute and the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre. Currently outside of the studio, Leslie has a one woman show she wrote and performs in entitled "This Is How We Heal."
Kathryn Davis | Speciality Class Series: Qigong
Kathryn is a Master Teacher of Qigong, an Energy/Vibrational Healer, Spiritual Doula and founder of the Kun Li Sheng System™. She holds certifications in teaching Qigong and Qigong Healing Techniques from the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine. She’s also certified in Reiki Energy hands-on and distance healing as well as the Sandlin Technique. Kathryn has traveled to Teotihuacan, Mexico to connect with the Mayan, Aztec, and Toltec healing traditions of the Nahuatl culture. She has also traveled to Mainland China several times to study with Masters of Qigong and Taoist philosophy.
Latoya Goree| Zumba
LaToya started dancing when she was 7 years old. She trained in many styles of dance including modern, West African, hip hop, and ballet. She studied at Alvin Ailey Dance Theater, Dance Theater of Harlem and Hubbard Street Dance. LaToya completed a BA in Advertising and Social Sciences from Michigan State University, and completed certifications in both Zumba and Barre.
Kuni Quimby | Zumba
Kuni has been a certified Zumba instructor for more than five years. For the last twenty years, she has studied various styles of dance and performing. Zumba Fitness has played a transformative role in Kuni’s life. She fell in love with Zumba instantly and truly believes that its positive influence can be felt throughout your everyday life. It is with this philosophy that makes Kuni look at her class not just as a fun dance class, but also a workout for your mind and soul. Kuni looks forward to sharing her infectious enthusiasm with you and can't wait to see your smiling face in class!
Hanakyle Moranz | Maya Method,
After HanaKyle received a BA in Arts Management from Emerson College, she knew she didn't want to sit at a desk all day. This began her pursuit of a career in movement practices. She trained as a massage therapist at the Swedish Institute in 2004, and became licensed in New York state shortly thereafter. Over the past decade, she completed a number of advanced yoga trainings, culminating in her certification in Integrated Movement Therapy, allowing her to work with a wide variety of people and conditions. She has also completed her certification in personal training at the National Academy of Sports Medicine. HanaKyle specializes in working with people with neurological conditions and chronic pain, and synthesizes her knowledge of the body into dynamic and therapeutic group classes.
Tony Stephens | Bosu Body, Outdoor Class
Tony grew up playing basketball and football. During college, he became a lifeguard and taught swimming for 10 years. He then transitioned to personal training and completed the ACE Fitness and National Academy of Sports Medicine certifications. Tony has a strong interest in yoga and meditation and has studied goal-setting and personal development for over 20 years. Tony specializes in functional training with a focus on cardiovascular endurance.
Ydelca Perez | Salsa
Ydhelca Perez is a professional dancer, choreographer, dance coach and Founder of Ydhelca Perez Dance. She trained and received her BFA in modern dance from the dance program at Hunter College, where she graduated with honors in choreography. Ydhelca has performed for artists such as Michael Leon Thomas, Iquail Johnson, Sekou McMiller, Niobis Licea, Juan Rodriguez, Barbara Mahler, and Charles Moulton. She has performed with companies such as Larry Keigwin and Company, The IndoRican Dance Project, La Bella Vita Arts, and Brooklyn Touch. She is an expert in different styles of dance including modern, jazz, contemporary, salsa, bachata, Afro Cuban, African, folk dance, and more. Ydhelca looks to bring out the very best in each student while having fun. Her classes aim to create small communities of people of all walks of life that gather to learn new movement.
Yxia Olivares | Zumba, Samba, Hip Hop
Yxia grew up dancing Samba with her family. She studied at Ballet Hispanico, Steps on Broadway, and Fazil’s Dance Studios; learning ballet, hip-hop, and flamenco. Yxia went on to perform and tour with recording artists including Will Smith, Wyclef Jean, Salt-N-Pepa, Britney Spears, Missy Elliott, Mary J. Blige. and Sean Paul. Yxia transitioned her career to teaching after completing certifications in Zumba Basics, Zumba Step, and Zumba Kids.
